Going Beyond the Cellphone for Travel Photos
People say, “It’s not the camera that takes good photos, it’s the photographer”, and this is completely true. Yet there’s a reason professionals use expensive gear – they are better for the job. However that doesn’t mean you need to go out and spend $10k on a set-up! Definitely not. Many of my clients express an interest in going beyond the cellphone for travel photos, but don’t want to be a professional, so here are a few suggestions for you. Note: Take cameras with you as carry on and remove the batteries as well. I made the mistake in the past checking my gear in and they removed my batteries. I ended up paying a fortune to replace the batteries – ugh.
GoPro HERO11 Black
If you are an active person who enjoys working out while traveling, then the GoPro Hero 11 Black is a perfect match for you. The GoPro is well known for action sports and its durability, compact size and high quality image quality capturing 27 megapixels as well as 4K video. The GoPro is also completely waterproof and even connect to your phone so can take great photos from any angle. They also shoot time-lapse photography, which is great if you’re catching an epic sunrise or particularly busy urban scene. Even if you are not interested in surfing or skydiving, having an action compact camera is still a brilliant tool to have in your suitcase.

DJI Mavic Air 2
It’s compact and takes great video and stills from a birds eye perspective. There’s nothing better than flying your drone up in the air and seeing the whole world from above. My suggestion is to practice flying before you travel with it. Also make sure to stay away from non fly zone areas. The app you use to fly your drone will notify you when it is safe to fly and when its time to land – no worries.

Nikon Zfc. (used to create my 1st Photo Book “Hidden Gems of Greece” (cover shot))
It’s not too heavy and is easy to travel with and has a great autofocus system along with a fast continuous shooting speed to capture brief moments. Plus it resembles the classic 35 mm yet mirrorless. The built in mic is surprisingly good on its own and the flip out screen makes it a breeze if you want to video blog your adventures. Not to call myself a “Hipster” but I am a victim of loving this camera. I also made sure to buy a cool camera strap to go with it, personally its screams for it.

Sony A7iv
It’s a bit pricey but worth every penny. Hell maybe you may want to take this hobby a bit further and you have the gear to do so. Sony is known for its great quality for video and stills so you can’t go wrong. I personally am loyal to Nikon, but if I were to reinvest in my gear from the very beginning, I would pick Sony all the way.
