Agency Model Test with Gemma
As a photographer specializing in model portfolios and actor headshots, I constantly seek new talent and fresh perspectives. Recently, I had the pleasure of working with a remarkable young woman agency model test with Gemma. Gemma is a full-time college student, she balances her studies with her job as a bartender at a restaurant. With her stunning looks and vibrant personality, I believe Gemma has the potential to excel in runway and high fashion.
During our session yesterday, I aimed to create a model portfolio that showcased her natural beauty with minimal to no makeup. My approach was to direct Gemma to express a variety of emotions: serious, sassy, happy, and playful. I decided to film her making these expressions, capturing the essence of her personality in real time. This not only allowed me to document her versatility but also created a relaxed atmosphere where she could feel free to explore her range.
To add depth to Gemma’s portfolio, I incorporated traditional editorial shots and a few digitals, ensuring a well-rounded selection of clean images. I opted for black and white for this batch, inspired by the many model portfolios I’ve seen on agency sites that utilize this timeless aesthetic. There’s something about black and white photography that adds an undeniable element of sophistication and mood to the images. It took me back to my roots—when I first fell in love with photography in the 90s, spending countless hours in the darkroom developing my skills.
Moving forward, I plan to replicate this successful model test approach in future sessions. Starting with filming headshots and encouraging a range of facial expressions is a fantastic exercise for models. It not only helps them loosen up but also builds their confidence in front of the camera, breaking down any tendency to overthink. Once they’re comfortable, transitioning into three-quarter and full-body shots becomes effortless.
I’m excited about this method and hope that modeling agencies will recognize its value and hire me to help build out portfolios. I genuinely believe that these authentic, expressive images can help models land work.
If you’re interested in booking a session with me, I offer online booking for convenience. Once you book, we will schedule a consultation to discuss your portfolio needs and collaboratively create a mood board. This interactive process ensures that you’re fully prepared, know what to bring, and are aware of poses you may want to try. It’s all about making the experience smooth and enjoyable for everyone involved.
I hope you enjoy the series of video reels and stills I created for Gemma’s profile, which will also be featured on Philly Faces—an online directory of talent where aspiring models can be discovered, whether they’re signed with an agency or not.
Stay tuned for more insights and updates as I continue to explore the world of photography and talent discovery!
